Choosing the right frame starts with understanding standard sizes. Some of the most common art frame sizes include 5"×7", 8"×10", 11"×14", 16"×20", and 18"×24". These sizes are widely available and make framing artwork simple and affordable.
Square formats like 8"×8" or 12"×12" are also popular, especially for modern or minimal pieces. If your artwork doesn’t match a standard size, using a mat (the border around the artwork inside the frame) can help it fit beautifully while adding a polished, gallery-style look.
When selecting a frame, think about both the artwork and your space. A clean white frame feels fresh and minimal, black frames create contrast and a modern edge, natural wood adds warmth, and gold frames bring a touch of elegance. The right choice depends on your home’s style and how you want the artwork to feel within the room.

If you are looking for custom frame sizes then getting artwork framed professionally is the best route. I have worked with local framers and Michaels in the past. The nice thing about Michaels is that they often offer up 40% off custom framing which is an awesome deal!
Adding a Matte to a Frame
With artwork it is nice to add a matte - ideally white or a light colour that matches the artwork. The purpose of the matte is to draw your attention to the artwork when you’re looking at it.
A matte should be 1-3 inches wide around the artwork. This allows the artwork to be highlighted and to really stand out-which is the point of course!
Popular Places to Buy Frames
There are many reliable places to find quality frames, whether you prefer shopping in-store or online. Stores like IKEA are known for affordable, minimalist frames in standard sizes. Michaels offers a wide range of styles along with custom framing services if you need something more specific. For budget-friendly options, Walmart carries simple frames that are easy to swap out as your style evolves.
No matter where you shop, sticking to standard sizes will give you the most flexibility and will keep costs down.
This frame is from Walmart - it’s so affordable yet looks like it’s professionally framed. Adding a matte to a frame really helps with that!
How to Clean and Care for Your Frames
Keeping your frames clean helps your artwork look its best. For glass or acrylic/plexiglass fronts, a soft cloth and a gentle glass cleaner will remove fingerprints and dust. Just spray the cloth rather than the frame to avoid moisture seeping inside.
For wood or painted frames, a dry or slightly damp microfiber cloth works well. Avoid harsh chemicals, especially on delicate finishes like gold leaf, as they can cause damage over time.
Where to Hang Framed Artwork?
A common question is: where should artwork actually go? A good rule of thumb is to hang art so the centre sits at eye level—typically around 60 inches from the floor. Above furniture like a sofa or bed, aim to position the artwork 6–10 inches above the piece to create a connected, cohesive look.

Lighting matters too. Try to avoid placing artwork in direct sunlight, as this can cause fading over time. Instead, choose a spot with soft, indirect light or consider adding picture lighting to highlight your piece.
Why My Artwork Comes Unframed
All of my artwork is shipped unframed, and this is intentional. Choosing your own frame allows you to match the piece perfectly to your home and personal style. Whether you prefer a crisp white frame, a bold black edge, warm natural wood, or a classic gold finish, the flexibility is yours.
It also makes shipping safer and more affordable, ensuring your artwork arrives in excellent condition. Once it’s in your hands, you get to complete the final step—selecting a frame that truly fits your space. That way, the artwork doesn’t just hang on your wall, it feels like it belongs there.
When you purchase an artwork of mine I am happy to meet with you virtually to help you decide what frame would suit the art and your home best. Professional framers are also happy to consult with you to help make your decision easier.
