The Purpose of an Artist Bio

An artist bio is a few short sentences that explains who you are as an artist. It often shares your education and your experience with being an artist. It is written in third person and is a formal piece of writing to let people know who you are as an artist, what inspires you and your experience that you've had thus far.

  • To introduce you as an artist to the public, curators, galleries, or potential buyers.

  • To give context about who you are and briefly explain what you create and with what materials (more detail is added in your artist statement)

  • Used in exhibitions, portfolios, press releases, websites, grant applications, and more to explain who you are when people are viewing your artwork

How to Write an Artist Bio

An artist biography is a short paragraph. Usually the number of words is indicated when you are putting together an artist application, such as a client for an artist grant, or an art exhibition.

Some artist bios are really short like 50 words and others are longer up to 200 words. It's important to keep track of the word count and write on something like a Google Doc or a Microsoft word doc so you can keep track of the number of words.

As an artist, I have multiple versions of my artist biographies saved with different word counts, so that I don't need to rewrite my biography over and over when I am doing applications, then I just title my biography with the number of words so I know which artist biography to use for various different applications.

In your artist biography, you are going to want to include the following items:

  • Speak in third person

  • Right formally in a full and complete sentences

  • Make sure to edit your work and check for spelling and grammar mistakes

  • Add in any heart related education that you have received

  • Include any art related achievements you have received

  • Briefly, explain your work, the materials and techniques that you use you will add more detail when you are writing an artist statement.

It is helpful to take a look at other artists' biographies to get ideas and make sure that your writing style matches the formality of writing an artist biography.
